Press Release: 17 COVID-19 Cases Identified Over Holiday Weekend

November 29, 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 29, 2021
Contact: Sarah Richards, Public Relations Specialist
Phone: (907) 443-4591

Nome, Alaska – Between Wednesday, Nov. 24 and Sunday, Nov. 28, Norton Sound Health Corporation identified 17 COVID-19 cases in the region. Of the new cases, 13 were in Nome, two were in Shishmaref, one was in Gambell, and one was in Brevig Mission.

In Nome, six of the new cases were close contacts, six were community spread, and one was travel-related. The cases in Gambell and Brevig cases were both travel-related, while the patients in Shishmaref were both close contacts to previously identified cases. All individuals have been notified and are safely isolating.

This weekend, NSHC started vaccinating children ages 5-11 with their second dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. If your child was vaccinated on or before Nov. 8, it is time for them to get their second dose. To schedule an appointment, visit: www.picktime.com/NSHC

Sixty-seven percent of the region’s total population is currently fully vaccinated, while 75% has received at least one dose of vaccine. Medical providers expect the percentage of fully vaccinated people to grow as soon as kids 5-11 are eligible to receive their second dose.

If you have questions regarding the vaccine, please email or call 1-800-315-6338; access code: 03286# at 11 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

There are currently 61 active cases in the region: 55 in Nome, three in Gambell, two in Shishmaref, and one in Brevig Mission. Village leadership in all communities have been notified.
