One COVID-19 Case Identified in Nome

Nome, Alaska – On Monday, April 5, a resident of Nome tested positive for COVID-19. The case is considered to be community spread.

The patient is an NSHC employee and there was no exposure to any patients. Upon receiving the test results, the patient began isolating immediately, and NSHC notified the State of Alaska Section of Epidemiology and Public Health Nursing. An investigation of the patient’s close contacts is underway.

As of Sunday, April 4, 70% of eligible people 16 and older have received at least the first dose of vaccine.

The total population, including adults and children, is 54% vaccinated. NSHC is aiming for herd immunity with a target of 70-80% vaccinated, so that things may safely reopen and return to normal. This herd immunity rate will need to include the region’s entire population, including those who are not currently eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.

The NSHC Pharmacy in Nome is still offering walk-in COVID-19 vaccinations, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. While there is no appointment necessary during these hours, patients who have scheduled an appointment will take preference over walk-in patients. Please note that NSHC cannot accommodate walk-ins during the lunch hour, after 3 p.m., or on the weekend. For priority vaccination, please schedule an appointment at picktime.com/NSHC or call the Patient Advocate during business hours for help at 443-4567.

If you live in a village, you can call your clinic ahead of time to be put on a waitlist.

Beginning this week, NSHC’s Tribal Leader Call will take place every Monday and Wednesday at 11 a.m. If you would like to learn more about COVID-19, testing or vaccinations, you can call into NSHC’s Tribal Leader Call. The call-in line is 1-800-315-6338; access code: 03286#. If you have questions or concerns about the vaccine, you can also email , and a team of medical professionals will respond to your message.
