Join NSHC IÑUA's Outreach Coordinator Carol Seppilu on Zoom and learn how to make fry bread with berry and cream cheese filling to celebrate Native American Heritage Month! We will be going over the steps together and by the end of the class we'll have made fresh fry bread. There will be a little bit of time in between for a discussion as a group while we wait for the dough to rise.

Things needed for the class:

A frying pan & stove, or an electric skillet
Frying oil
Flour
1 ½ cup of warm water
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
2 ¼ tsp (or 1 pkg) rapid rise yeast, to make the dough rise quickly
1 stick butter
¼ cup berries, I like to use tundra blueberries or cranberries + sugar to sweeten it up
1 package cream cheese
1 can sweetened condensed milk + water

Support 42 years of Health Aide Care and Earn Money at the same time. Be a model for a Community Health Aide Student. These students are already Health Aides but are getting more advanced training. You will be a “pretend” patient for Health Aides; a Health Aide trainer (PA or doctor) will be present at each appointment, which will last about 2 hours unless otherwise noted. The upcoming training is Session 3, February 12-March 1, 2018, in Nome. Most visits will be at the hospital.

NOTE: These appointments are for Health Aide training only and are NOT intended to be like an appointment at the hospital. If you need help with a health problem, you MUST see a provider. THESE ARE PRACTICE APPOINTMENTS ONLY.

Patient Types Needed and amount of money for your time:

• Prenatal exam with trainer and one student. You should be 7 months or more pregnant. It is just like a “real” OB visit; however, no pelvic exams are done. The student takes your vital signs and weight, measures abdomen, listens to baby’s heart rate, determines whether the baby is head-up or head-down by feeling abdomen, and asks questions about how you are doing. You can make up answers. $100

• Prenatal exam visit for 4 student class. You should be more than 7 months pregnant. This visit is about 1 and ½ hrs and doesn’t involve any questions, just hands-on skills. Students would measure your abdomen, listen to baby’s heart rate, and determine whether the baby is head-up or head-down by feeling abdomen. This would be done at the Health Aide Training Center.
• $50 per student.

• Male genital exam. Includes STD questions and exam. No swab or rectal exam. The Health Aide trainer will tell you ahead of time how to make up answers to the questions. $75

• Female genital exam. Includes STD questions and exam, including pelvic exam. The Health Aide trainer will tell you ahead of time how to make up answers to the questions. $75

• Well Child Exam. Newborn to 6th birthday; NO shots given. $50

• Female breast exam. Class of 4 students. $25 per student

Want to sign up? Questions? Call the Health Aide Training Center at 443-3404 and leave a message for a trainer to call you back.

As many of you may have heard, earlier this week on the evening of January 29th, a Guardian Flight medevac plane was reported overdue for landing in the small southeast village of Kake, AK. A search effort for the missing plane and three onboard crew members was conducted by the US Coast Guard and many local search and rescue groups as well as local good Samaritans. We, as an entire larger community of medevac providers, and especially those here in the State of Alaska, have been anxiously awaiting news from the search and rescue efforts. It is with great sorrow that I report that yesterday evening, after 48 hours of searching, the US Coast guard stopped the official search for the team after finding several pieces of debris but no crew members. The crew members on board were Pilot: Captain Patrick Coyle, Flight Nurse: Stacie Morse, RN and Flight medic: Margaret Langston, MICP. As a community of air medical providers we are deeply saddened by the loss of three wonderful people whom several of us were fortunate enough to know personally. These heroes laid down their lives to help another, and we would like to join in on a statewide memorial for these lost souls.

This evening, starting  at 6pm Friday February 1st, there will be a candlelight vigil at Old St. Joe’s for anyone in the community that would like to attend, show their support, empathy and solidarity  for the families, the Guardian Flight crew and indeed our own flight crew here at NSHC. Medevac is such a critical part of the medical system here in Alaska, and there are few whose lives a medevac team hasn’t impacted, especially here in our region. So we invite anyone within the community who would like to attend, medical providers, friends of medevac, past patients, family members, all of you. It would truly show the spectacular bond that our great state of Alaska has if we can literally pack the house this evening. This ceremony should last approximately 30-45 minutes. There will be a moment of silence as well as a candle lighting ceremony. If you are able to, please bring a candle to light. Candlestick type candles work well but remember to poke them through a small circular piece of paper at the base to catch the wax drips. You will be holding your candle for the ceremony. In lieu of a candle (being in Nome means we are in short supply), there are apps available for download on your smart phone that will display a candle on the screen. What we do as a medevac team is more than a job, it is a community, please join us tonight in celebrating that community and showing support for those of us that will never forget.

Dress code: Flight crew, EMS, FD and Police staff: please come dressed in your emergency services uniform. Clean flight suit/uniform. Others: please come dressed in clothing appropriate for the occasion.

We hope to see you all there shortly before 6pm and offer our sincere thanks in advance for your support.
