In an effort to grow our own, Tribal Training and Development works with UAF Northwest Campus to provide training programs in the region for people interested in pursuing a healthcare career. UAF Northwest Campus now has three training programs, where participants get on track to employment at NSHC: the personal care attendant, certified nursing assistant, and nursing programs.
High School and College Programs
College Internships
In efforts to provide meaningful entry level positions to college students interested in healthcare careers, NSHC provides internships to scholarship recipients. Students should express commitment to return to the region for employment with NSHC. Students are NSHC employees and need to meet all eligibility requirements for employment. Please reach out to Irvin Barnes or Colleen Johnson to express interest. This program is dependent on the need and availability of open positions.
High School Student Workers
Our student worker program is an entry level program to introduce high school students to opportunities at NSHC. Students work in a department and participate in professionalism workshops. Students are NSHC employees and meet all eligibility requirements for employment. This program is dependent on the need and availability of open positions.
Lunch and Learns
NSHC and AHEC offer learning experiences for students in the region during a luncheon meeting. Healthcare professionals speak with students about their jobs and interact with students to inspire interest in healthcare careers.
Dual Credit Class and Training Opportunities
NSHC and AHEC offer dual credit class opportunities in regional high schools. At least one is offered in Nome and there is a rotating schedule to offer dual credit classes in the villages. Certificated training is also offered, such as first aid and CPR.
Summer Programs
NSHC and AHEC offer multiple summer programs to expose students to healthcare careers and support for higher education and careers. Some of these programs include summer camps, College Jump Start, and Behind the Wheel.
