Nome, Alaska – On Tuesday, Dec. 7, Norton Sound Health Corporation identified six COVID-19 cases in the region.

Of the new cases, five were in Nome and one was in Stebbins. All six cases were considered to be close contacts of previously identified cases. The individuals have been notified and are safely isolating.

Alaska’s COVID-19 numbers continue to decline. In the last 14 days, there has been a 28% decrease in new cases in the state. On average, the U.S. has seen an 27% increase in the last 14 days.

This week, NSHC is hosting two socially-distanced holiday events. In order to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, appointments are required to participate.

In Nome, there will be a Photos with Santa event on Friday, Dec. 10 from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This will take place on the second floor of the hospital; just follow the signs to Santa’s Workshop. Donations will be accepted to benefit the Nome Preschool Association.

In the villages or for children currently in quarantine, Santa will also be available for Facetiming, Zooming, or chatting on the phone on Friday, Dec. 10 from 3-5 p.m.

To participate in either of these events, please sign up to reserve your spot at www.picktime.com/NSHC.
There are currently 71 active cases in the region: 30 in Nome, 13 in Stebbins, 12 in Brevig Mission, seven in Unalakleet, four in Shaktoolik, two in Shishmaref, two in Gambell, and one in St. Michael. Village leadership in all communities have been notified.
