Nome, Alaska – The first baby born in 2025 at Norton Sound Regional Hospital bears the names of both of her grandmothers.
Danita Douglas and Dwayne Charles of Koyuk welcomed baby girl Olga Margaret Douglas-Charles into the world at 7:12 a.m. on Monday, January 6.
Baby Olga was not due for another week, but Douglas and Charles were ready and waiting in Nome since Dec. 27. Norton Sound Health Corporation’s labor and delivery team helped deliver the dark-haired newborn, weighing in at 6 pounds and 11 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches long.
Douglas said the beginning of the pregnancy had some complications and moments of doubt, but the baby made it through.
“She’s our warrior in the storm,” Douglas said.
Baby Olga will join a large, blended family with many siblings. Charles has 11 other children, and Douglas has three more. In Koyuk, Olga will meet Kalyn Daniels, 24, Emmanuel Charles, 22, Murphy Charles, 17, Levi Charles, 15, Echo Charles, 13, Stason Douglas, 12, Elmer Douglas, 8, and Hannah Hammond-Douglas, 6.
Douglas is daughter of Darin and Margaret Douglas. Charles is the son of the late Sankey and Olga Charles. Douglas and Charles wanted to honor both of their mothers through their youngest daughter’s name. Charles said naming the baby after his mom is like her coming back into the world.
