Nome, Alaska – On March 27, Norton Sound Health Corporation identified a positive COVID-19 case in Nome.
The patient is a resident of Nome and tested positive in accordance with the City of Nome’s testing and quarantine mandate related to travel. The patient is now safely isolating. There are currently three active cases in Nome and one active case in a regional village.
NSHC continues to encourage everyone in the region to continue to socially distance, practice good hand hygiene, wear masks, and above all, get vaccinated if you are over 16 years old. One new benefit to being vaccinated is that Bering Air is now allowing vaccinated travelers to fly without first having their negative COVID-19 test results in hand; everyone still needs to test, and can now wait for their results in the Bering Air lobby. Many villages no longer require a quarantine after arrival if you are fully vaccinated, but still require a negative test upon arrival.
Children of vaccinated parents still need to quarantine in most cases after travel. Please check with your destination village for current local mandates related to testing and quarantine.
There are just a few days left to be entered in NSHC’s COVID-19 Vaccination Prize Drawing. Any regional resident who has received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine is eligible to enter the drawing. To do so, entrants must complete a short questionnaire in one of the following ways:
- Fill out the online form at https://bit.ly/3tpzQKa
- Text VACCINE to 833-413-0568
- Pick up a copy at your local clinic and ask a staff member to scan and send it to
The questionnaire must be completed by March 31, 2021. The drawing will take place on April 1, and prizes include:
- 1st Grand Prize: Four round-trip tickets anywhere in the U.S. on Alaska Airlines and $3,000 cash
- 2nd Grand Prize: $8,000 (+ shipping cost) toward four wheeler/ATV of choice purchased in region
- $500 toward groceries at local store – 16 prizes (one in each community)
- $500 fuel voucher – 16 prizes (one in each community)
- 10% of survey respondents will receive $100 – drawn weekly
Walk-in COVID-19 vaccinations are available at the Nome Pharmacy 9 a.m-12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m. Monday through Friday. While there is no appointment necessary during these hours, patients who have scheduled an appointment will take preference over walk-ins.
