Three COVID-19 Cases Identified in Unalakleet

Nome, Alaska – On Monday, Dec. 20, Norton Sound Health Corporation identified three positive COVID-19 cases in Unalakleet. The patients are considered to be close contacts to previously identified cases. They have been notified and are safely isolating.

The U.S. is currently seeing an influx of Omicron variant COVID-19 cases, with over 70% of positive cases being the new, highly contagious variant, while the Delta variant accounts for just 26% of recent cases. Thankfully, most cases have been mild, with the most common initial sign of infection being a sore throat and other cold symptoms.

NSHC medical staff continues to state that the most important thing regional residents can do to protect themselves against the Omicron variant is to get vaccinated and get a booster vaccine to help improve immune response. People over age 65 are at high risk and should be sure to stay up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccines. The Moderna and Pfizer boosters are especially effective in preventing serious illness and death.

There are currently 43 active cases in the region: 21 in Unalakleet, 12 in Nome, eight in St. Michael, and two in Stebbins. Village leadership in all communities has been notified.
